Keď som dnes prišiel zo školy, pozrel som aký je dátum.. Uvedomil som si že som totálne zabudol na blog... Na jednej strane som rád, že mám veľa aktivít, že na to ani nestíham myslieť, no mrzí ma že som nezačal písať častejšie.
Život tu beží veľmi rýchlo.
Asi tak, ako sa tu priberá... (pribral som asi 2,5kg)!
Dnešný príspevok by som začal postrehmi, ktoré ma tu prekvapili.
- Američania nemajú zvyk si želať "dobrú chuť" pred jedlom.
Vždy keď ideme jesť, mám tendenciu povedať "dobrú chuť", no oni to proste nepoužívajú:) Tak sa snažím byť kreatívny a učím ich dobrú chuť po slovensky.:-)
-Vo väčšine prípadoch nejedia s nožíkom.
Keď chystám príbor tak na mňa pozerajú že načo im je nôž:-)
-V domoch si nevyzúvajú topánky
Toto bol pre mňa trochu šok. Nieže si nevyzúvajú topánky, niektorí dokonca vykladajú topánky na sedačku, či stôl v obývačke. Každopádne nie všetci, no už som sa stretol s viacerými prípadmi:-)
-Nechodia nikde peši
Všade sa vozia na autách, síce je to viackrát spôsobené vzdialenosťou, no ísť na aute je cool.
Keď ste študent high school a nemáte auto, akoby ste ani nežili. Keď som im povedal, že u nás šoférujeme až od 18 a ani v osemnástich ešte nemáme vlastné auto, sa ma spýtali že mám vôbec vlastný mobil:-)))
-Ľudia tu nefajčia
Toto bol jeden s najväčších, príjemných šokov. Balíček cigariet tu stojí cca 8 dolárov. Ľudia hovoria že je to drahé. V porovnaní že minimálna mzda je 10 dolárov/hodina, je to podobné ako u nás, so mzdou 2,5 E.
-Je tu legálna marihuana
Bol som v šoku, keď som videl pri ceste v centre mesta stáť chlapíka s posterom v ruke. Robil reklamu obchodu s trávou a vyzeral že je asi trávou aj platený:-)
-Jazda na červenú
Keď svieti červená, to ešte neznamená že nemôžte odbočiť. Povolené je odbočenie vpravo, ak nejde žiadne auto
-Šalát
Ľudia tu začínajú jedlo šalátom. Samozrejme vždy nasledujú buď hranolky alebo niečo vyprážané:-)
-Hey, whats up? / How are you doing?
Američania používajú tieto frázy automaticky, mám pocit (hlavne v škole) že to hovoria len tak zo zvyku, pritom ich nezaujíma ako sa máte, je to skôr štýl pozdravu:-)
-V reštaurácii sa viac starajú o zákazníkov
Stále sa pýtajú ako sa máte, aj keď ich to nezaujíma. Keď si objednáte sladký nápoj (coke,cocktail), platíte len jeden raz, ďalšie poháre sú free.
Asi to ale bude tým, že ľudia im za to nechávajú dobré tipy:-))
V skratke
-oslávili sme Corine 9. narodeniny (pes) :)
-skončila sa nám "football season"
-field trip (Marine Biology) na pobrežie USA
Za posledný mesiac sme mali asi 6 dní, kedy nám nepršalo. To znamený že príroda je tu veľmi pestrá a farebná. Už som si na to pomaly zvykol. Paradoxom je že som ešte ani raz nepoužil dáždnik. Našťastie je to vždy len také "poprchanie":-)
Takisto sa udržujem v kondícii, aj keď to moc nezastavuje to priberanie)). Posilku navštevujem pravidelne.
S host mamou Rebeccou, sme boli na turistike, tentokrát vrch Mailbox Peak.
Bolo to dlhé a vyčerpávajúce, no obohatila nám to náhodná turistka, ktorá sa k nám pridala v polovici, a síce Viktória, kt. pochádza z Ružomberka. V USA žije už 40 rokov. Bolo to milé si porozprávať trošku po "našom".
Homecoming
Mali sme dlho očakávaný "homecoming". Pre tých ktorí nevedia o čo sa jedná, je to súčasť študentského života, v skratke je to diskotéka. Koná sa to v školskej telocvični, chalani sú navlečení v oblekoch, dievčatá v šatách. Btw, ani ja som nemal poňatia čo to je. Decká idú buď v partiách, alebo chalani pozývajú dievčatá, (s tým že im platia lístok na homecoming a pozývajú na večeru).
Ja som zvolil možnosť číslo 2, pozval som dievča, Ellie:-)
Od začiatku ma všetci upozorňovali, že to nebude len taká obyčajná diskotéka na aké som možno zvyknutý.
Som rád že je to za nami, niesom z toho ohúrený, dávam tomu tak 3-. Zaujímavé na tom bolo pozerať sa ako sa zabávajú americkí študenti. Je to veľmi odlišné od tých našich. Neviem to ani opísať, jednoducho to neni tanec, dokonca ani skákanie, to je krútenie o seba zadkami a podobne :) :) :)
Osobne mi to príde dosť nevhodné a nemiestne, keď to porovnám ako vážne sa tu berie škola a správanie.
Halloween, ďalší "big deal".
U nás príliš halloween neuznávam, no keďže som na rok "američan", na tento "sviatok" som sa veľmi tešil..
Klasika, najskôr sme vyrezávali dyne.
Ja som halloween strávil v "Seabeck Conference Center". Majú tu komunitu, ktorá organizuje halloween "trick or treat" večer pre obyvateľov Seabeck. Ľudia tu žijú v dosť od seba vzdialených domoch, čiže deti nemajú kam chodiť "trick or treat".
Prišlo okolo 600 detí, čo bol veľký úspech. Bol som milo prekvapený touto akciou, ako tu ľudia dodržiavajú tradície a vedia pripraviť pekný program pre deti zadarmo. No ostávam názoru že aj my máme svoje tradície, čiže v našej rodine to aplikovať nemienim:-) Ale ak by som mal možnosť, kľudne by som prišiel do USA len kvôli halloween-u, rozhodne to stojí za to.
Udržujú ma aj v spoločenskej kondícii.
S Nancy som niekoľko krát navštívil v Admiral Theater praádne koncerty- o hudbu teda nieje núdza.
Taktiež som bol s Chuckom na Írskom koncerte v meste Mount Vernon. Zobral som so sebou výmennú študentku z Holandska, ktorá je na výmene vo vedľajšom meste Poulsbo.
Po ceste naspäť, nás Chuck povozil po Seattli, chceli sme vidieť nočný život v predvečer Halloween, dosť zaujímavé.
Všetci sme si to veľmi užili:)
Tenis
Tenisová sezóna je za nami. Dovolím si povedať že so smutným koncom, no taký je život.
V lige sme skončili na 3. mieste, čo je veľký úspech.
20-21. 10. sa uskutočnil ligový turnaj, 2 singles a 2 doubles z každého tímu. Prvých 6 singles postupovalo na dištriktný turnaj. Po náročných dvoch dňoch, piatich odohratých zápasoch, som obsadil 5. priečku. Kvôli turnaju som zmeškal orchestra koncert:/, no dostal som sa do dištriktu.
Dištriktný turnaj sa konal 30.-31. 10. Tam to už bolo na nože, 6 najlepších zo všetkých líg v našom dištrikte. Do štátneho kola išlo 6 najlepších hráčov. Ja som skončil na 7. mieste, jedno kolo od štátu. Asi som to v hlave neustál, keď som išiel do posledného zápasu s tým že sa môžem dostať na celoštátny turnaj. Prehral som ho 0:6 2:6. Bolo to trochu sklamanie, na to akú som odohral sezónu. :/
Oregon
Víkend 4.-6. 11. som strávil s Nancy v Oregone.
Jej vnuk sa zúčastnil štátneho kola v cross country v meste Eugene, kde obsadil 17. priečku!
Zobrala ma so sebou, keďže v Eugene je Lucka z nášho RC Bratislava. Strávili sme spolu poobedie v detskom zábavnom centre (klasikí američania) hraním biliardu a detských automatov:)
Nancy má 2 malých vnukov, čo mi trochu pripomenulo domov a mojich súrodencov:)
Tento víkend som si veľmi užil.
"Night in Slovakia"
Host Rotary dištrikt organizuje "California trip".
Jeho cena je dosť vysoká a nemal som financie aby som sa zúčastnil. Môj host rotary klub mi povedali že je to len na mne. Ak chcem ísť, financie niesú problém. Ja som na začiatku ani nechcel ísť, no dosť sa to zmenilo po našom "Orientation meetingu", kde som spoznal ostatné decká. Sme výborná partia, tak som si povedal že keď je možnosť, tak ju využijem.
Dohodli sme sa, že spravíme event "Night In Slovakia", kde ja navarím naše jedlá, zahrám na klavíri, niečo zatancujem, zaspievam, ľudia si kúpia za 20 dolárov lístky a "California trip" sa stane skutočnosťou.:)
Akcia sa konala 2.11. u Chucka v Seabeck Conference Center, o 6pm a prišlo niečo cez 70 ľudí.
Varil som guláš,kapustnicu, fazuľovú polievku, šúlance s makom, makové lokše, štrúdlu a piekol som medovníky. Taktiež som mal prezentáciu o Slovensku, spieval som ľudovky, hral na klavíri a po celý čas som mal na sebe kroj, ktorý mi poslali rodičia:-)
Akcia sa vydarila, ľudom to veľmi chutilo, ešte stále pýtajú recepty. Financií sa vyzbieralo dostatok, čiže o týždeň, vo štvrtok 17.11. na ceste do Kalifornie. Veľmi sa teším a už sa neviem dočkať.
Mám pocit že toto je najdlhší príspevok aký som kedy napísal, no ešte si dovolím príspevok k voľbám. (49ers je football team)
Osobne som sklamaný z Trumpovho víťazstva. Reprezentovať najmocnejšiu krajinu sveta, nebude len taká sranda:)
Západné pobrežie vyhrala Clintonová, čiže ľudia sú tu viac pre demokratického kandidáta, no všetci sa na to príliš spoliehali. Napriek tomu, z čoho som dosť prekvapený, to nevidia s tou Amerikou až tak zle. Každý hovorí že aj Trump môže byť dobrý prezident, že treba mu dať šancu.

When I came from school today, I looked what was the date .. I realized that I totally forgot to my blog. On the one hand I am glad I have a lot of activities, but I'm sorry that I havent started writing more often.
Life is going very fast.
At least as fast as I am getting fat ... (I've gained about 2.5 kg)
I would like to start today's post with facts that surprised me here.
- Americans are not used to wish "bon appetit" before a meal.
Whenever we go to eat, I tend to say "good taste", but they just do not use it :) So I try to be creative and teach them a "dobrú chuť" in Slovak. :-)
-In Most cases, they dont eat with a knife.
They are surprised when Im eating rice and chicken with fork and knife :-)
-They dont take off their shoes in house
This was a shock for me. Sometimes, shoes even land on the sofa or table in the living room. Anyway, not all, but I've seen it couple times:-)
-Dont walk so much
Everywhere drive by cars, although its not too far, but go by the car is cool.
When you are a student of high school and do not have a car, its like youre not living. When I told them thatin Slovakia we drive up to 18 and we dont own a car in 18, I was asked, if I own at least cell phone :-)))
-People Do not smoke here
This was one of the largest, pleasant shock. Pack of cigarettes here costs about $ 8. People say that it's expensive. Compared to the minimum wage, what is $ 10 / hour, it is similar to ours, with a wage of 2.5 E.
- Legal marijuana
I was shocked when I saw the guy standing with the poster in hand next to the road. He was advertising marijuana shop and seemed to be about being paid by weed:-)
-Driving while red traffic light
When the red lights, it does not mean that you can not turn. Right turn is permitted, unless no car
-Salad
People are starting dish with salad. Of course, always followed ny either fries or anything fried :-)
-Hey, Whats up? / How are you doing?
Americans use these phrases automatically, I feel (especially at school) that they keep asking it only as a habit, they do not care how you are, it's their kind of saying hi :-)
-In the restaurants, they care more about customers
They always keep asking how you are, even if they do not care. When you order a drink (coke, cocktail), you pay only once, following glasses are free.
But it will probably be because people leave them good tips then :-))

Over the last month we had about six days when it didnt rain. This means that nature here is very varied and colorful. I have already got used to it. The paradox is that I havent used the umbrella yet. Fortunately, it's always just light rain:-)
I also keep fit, even if it doesnt stop to gain)). I visit gym regularly.
We went hiking with host mum Rebecca,- mountain Mailbox Peak.
It was long and exhausting, but we met tourist, who joined us in the middle, named Victoria, who comes from Ruzomberok. She has lived in the US for 40 years. It was nice tohang out a bit in our language.
Homecoming
We had been waiting long time, for overrated "homecoming". For those who do not know what it is, it's part of student life, basically, it is a disco. It takes place in the school gym, guys are wearing tuxedos, girls wear dress. Btw, even I had no idea what it is. The kids go either party in groups, or the boys invite girls (guys pay the tickets for Homecoming and invite girls to dinner).
I chose option number two, I invited the girl Ellie :-)
From the beginning, everyone warned me that it is not gonna be just an ordinary discotheque I could expect.
I'm glad it's over. I would grade it as a C- . Interesting thing was to watch how the "American kids" are having fun. It's very different from ours. I cant even describe it, simply is not a dance, even jumping. It is twisting by butts to each other and stuff like this:)
Personally, I find it quite inappropriate and out of place when I compare how seriously they take school and behavior.
Halloween, another "big deal".
I dont recognize Halloween in Slovakia, but since I am "American" this year, I was really excited about this stuff.
Classically, first we carved pumpkins.
I spent Halloween at "Seabeck Conference Center." They are nice ommunity that organizes a Halloween "Trick or Treat" night for the inhabitants of Seabeck. People live there in houses not placed next to each other, so the children have nowhere to go to "trick or treat".
There were about 600 children, which was a great success. I was pleasantly surprised by this event, as people here know and respect the traditions and make a nice program for children for free. But I am about the opinion that we also have our traditions, so Im not gonna intend to apply it in our family back home:-) But if I had the opportunity, I would come to the US just for Halloween- its well worth it.
They keep me in the social condition.
Nancy took me few times to visit the Admiral Theater - great music performances!
Also, I went to Mount Vernon with Chuck to Ireland concert. We took with us exchange student Sidney from Netherland, who is on exchange in the next city, Poulsbo.
On the way back, Chuck showed us night Seattle, we wanted to see the night life on the eve of Halloween, really interesting!
We all really enjoyed it :)
Tennis
Tennis season is over. I have to say it ended with a sad end, but that's life.
In the league we ended up in 3rd place, which is a great success.
20.-21.10., was held a league tournament, 2 singles and 2 doubles from each team. The first 6 singles advanced to district tournament. After a difficult two days, five games played, I finished at 5th place. I missed orchestra concert because of the tournament: / but I got to district.
District tournament was held on 30th to 31st of October. It was more difficult, 6 best from each league in our district. 6 best players could make it to state tournament. I ended up in 7th place, one round before the state. I guess I was realizing too much in my head when I went into the last game that I can get into the national tournament. I lost 0:6 2:6. It was a bit disappointing game to end up with this score though, if I compare it with my whole season.
Oregon
I spent weekend November 4th-6th with Nancy in Oregon.
Her grandson attended a national championship in the Cross Country in Eugene, where he finished at 17th place!
She took me with her, since I got a friend Lucka from my Rotary Club Bratislava. We spent the afternoon together in the children's entertainment center (typical Americans) playing billiards and machines for children :)
Nancy has two small grandchildren, which reminded me a bit of home, and my siblings :)
I enjoyed that weekend very much.
"Night in Slovakia"
Host Rotary District organizes "California trip".
Its price is very high and I did not have the finances that I could attend. My host Rotary club told me that it's just up to me. If I want to go, there are not finance problem. At the beginning, I didnt even want to go, but I changed my mind after "Ist Orientation Meeting", where I met other exchange students. We are a great group and I told myslef that if there is a chance, lets get it!
We organised event "Night in Slovakia", where I would cookour food, play the piano, dance and sing. People would buy tickets for $ 20 and "California trip" would come true. :)
The event was held November 2nd, in Seabeck Conference Center, at 6pm and there came about 70 people.
I cooked guláš, cabbage soup, bean soup, dumplings with poppy seeds, poppy seed pancakes, strudel and I baked honey cookies. I also had a presentation about Slovakia, I sang folk songs, played the piano and I was wearing a traditional costume that my parents sent to me :-)
The event was successful, people really enjoyed it, still asking for recipes. We have collected enough money to go to California, so in one week, on Thursday, 17/11 I will be on the way to California. I am very excited and I cant wait.
I feel that this is the longest post I've ever written, but still, I would like to say a littleabout the elections.
Personally I am disappointed with Trump´s victory. Represent the most powerful country in the world, its not just fun, like he seems to be having :)
Clinton won the west coast, so people here are more for the Democratic candidate, but they all relied on it too much.
Nevertheless, I am kind of surprised, people dont find it too bad with America. People say that even Trump may be a good president, we just need to give him a chance.
